Two major US airlines are in talks with Bristol International Airport
over launching transatlantic flights.
American Airlines and Continental Airlines are conducting feasibility
studies into launching a New York flight for summer 2005. The service
would be the first scheduled transatlantic flight from Bristol.
Aviation development director at Bristol, Tony Hallwood said: “Given
that the West of England has the largest unserved catchment area to the
USA in Western Europe, and that a projected figure of 100,000 passengers
would use a direct flight from Bristol International each year, we are
confident that Bristol stands an excellent chance of becoming the UK’s
next transatlantic gateway.”
The airlines are expected to complete evaluations in the Spring, after
which discussions with the airport will continue.
